Desert Rose

“I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man’s desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

DSC09473

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing’s as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall– Desert Rose, lyrics by Sting

Kathleen Morrill says:

“Oh I love the colors and depth!! So lush. Ahhhh looks like a dream”

Katie Davis says:

“I absolutely love this! The water is so life-like and the scenery in the background is breathtaking! It’s very serene and beautiful! I love how the blue of her clothing really stands out against the earth tones. She looks very pensive and it makes me wonder what her story is… This is so very beautiful!

The Martyrdom of St Sebastian

Sebastian was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and was later martyred.

If I was born a boy, my parents would have called me Sebastian.

Sebastian is a character in the Little Mermaid.

Sebastian Michaelis is the lead in my favorite manga, The Black Butler.

Lord Sebastian Flyte is the tragic character in Brideshead Revisted.

I visited San Sebastian in Spain.

Katie Davis says:

“I love how you went with green for the skin color; it seems like dramatic lighting and adds another level of seriousness and really makes a powerful statement! Ah the arrow wounds look so painful! But very realistic!! Very beautiful work!”

Pieta of the Angel

Inspired by The Tragedy of Man by Imre Madach, Michelangelo’s Pieta, Saint Bride by John Duncan and The Vintner’s Luck by Elizabeth Knox.

Sobran is caught by an angel when he faints in The Vintner’s Luck.

Lucifer falls down from heaven into the garden of Eden to tempt Adam and Eve in The Tragedy of Man.  Lucifer then puts Adam and Eve in a deep sleep where he shows them the history of the future.

In Michelangelo’s Pieta, Jesus lies on his mother’s lap in a pyramidal layout that I also used below.

The wings are inspired by John Duncan’s painting of two angels taking St Bride over the sea of Scotland.

Katie Davis Says:

WOW!! This is beautiful! I love how you made the angel wings with all the different colors and patterns! and the way you painted the cloth looks so real! Like I could reach through the painting and touch it! I am always in awe of your paintings! They are so beautiful!

The Death of Cleopatra

This is my second attempt at capturing the famous end to the life of Egyptian Queen Cleopatra when she committed suicide through an asp bite. It is still unclear how historically accurate that is.

With thy sharp teeth this knot intrinsicate
Of life at once untie: poor venomous fool
Be angry, and dispatch.

—Cleopatra, Act V, scene II
Antony and Cleopatra

So this is the painting

This is what inspired it

The Death of Cleopatra, 2009

What Katie Davis says about this:

This is so cool! First of all, I love your reference picture!! Your Cleopatra costume is amazing! I really like how you painted the scales on the snake! It’s so detailed! And I have probably said this before, but I am mesmerized by the way you paint hands! Her clothing is so beautiful as well! And I really like her expression; like acceptance and almost relief? It feels serene but ominous at the same time and it’s so cool that I’m sensing such contradicting emotions from one piece! I love this! Absolutely beautiful!

What Kathleen Morrill says about this:

I love the textures of everything in this :0 especially in the hands and skin.
