Ashanti Girl

My father is from Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. I was born in the south, in Accra.

From Wikipedia ” The name Asante “warlike” derives from the 1670s as the Asanti went from being a tributary state to a centralized hierarchical kingdom. The Ashanti Empire was founded in 1670 and the Ashanti capital Kumasi was founded in 1680 by Asantehene (emperor) Osei Kofi Tutu I on the advice of Ɔkͻmfoͻ Anͻkye, his premier.”

“The Ashanti  ethnic group is a wealthy ethnic group due to large gold deposits that are mined within  Kumasi…Ashantiland is endowed with large deposits of gold and diamonds. Ashantiland  is a top-9 gold producer on Earth,[11] with other industrial mineral deposits of economic value  include diamonds, manganese, bauxite with a high content of aluminium and silica, iron, clay and limestone with traces of copper, platinum, lithium,tin arsenic and mica”

I remember very well the time I painted these two. I went to the La Palm Beach Hotel and they had constructed an African hut-like restaurant at the back by the sea. So I painted it

The painting above is “The Russian Ballerina”. I cannot add a caption to it right now and I have no clue why. I came to Ghana with a copy of the cartoon “Anastasia” and for a brief period I was obsessed with everything Russian. Originally, the ballerina was meant to have a golden ring for a tutu (which you can still see), one ribbon for a leg and another wooden leg. My mother looked at it and thought it looked incomplete so I added a real tutu over it. I ended up not liking it but I still left it that way…maybe I should try the same concept again but this time leaving as it was intended.

But then again you will realize that I barely do the same thing twice. We shall see.

Calabashes are used to hold water in Ghana. Carrying items on heads is another cultural signature.
