Deadly Sinner #7 : The lazy stepsister as well as procrastinating college students
In Romania, Ion Creanga collected and wrote many traditional folk tales with wise, moral endings. One of them was Fata babei si fata mosneagului, the story of a one hardworking and one lazy set of stepsisters. I have heard many versions of this story where the hardworking stepsister is rewarded for her hard work while the lazy stepsister is either punished for her laziness or enlightened to see the error of her ways.
The background is a traditional Romanian woven rug that can sometimes be hung on walls.
I wrote a final paper on the story of David for my college religion class. I am now reading the novelized version of his life in King David by Allan Massie. David played the kinnor (an Israelite lyre) for Saul to cure him of his madness. There is a scene at the beginning of the book where David tends to his flock under the starry sky while composing poetry.
The boy in this painting is based on a painting by Daniel Gerhartz.
Last but not the least, I have a cute little cousin in Romania called David. So this painting is for him!
“Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah” – Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah
Tradusa in Romaneste pentru David sa citeasca:
My art teacher encouraged me to start painting oil on canvas when I was five going on six. My mother was hesitant at first because of the intense smell of the solvent used to dilute the paints but it worked out. This has been my medium of painting ever since. I graduated from watercolors to acrylics on paper to oil on canvas. So in my head oil will always be boss; the mark of the professional and the highest level of art creation.
